Mobile computing is the ability to use a computing potential without a pre-defined position and link to a network to publish or subscribe to information. It’s also stated as “taking a computer and all necessary files and software out into the field”.
- The form of human–computer communication by which a computer is expected to be transported during normal usage is usually referred to as Mobile Computing.
- It’s also a new way of interacting with the computer device and to assist other computing capabilities being present at different mobile position.

Personal Digital Assistants
PDA’s are also called as pocket computers, PDA’s combine elements of computing, telephone/fax, Internet and networking in a single device. A typical PDA can function as cellular phone, fax sender, web browser and personal coordinator.
Smartphone’s merge mobile phone and hand held computers into a single device. They let you to store information and set up programs namely apps which for various purposes along with a mobile phone in a single device.
Tablet computer is a one piece mobile computer. They are equipped with touch screens with fingers/stylus as input device. Tablets are larger than the Smart phones and Personal Digital Assistants.
Mobile Operating Systems.
A mobile operating system is the software platform that determines the functions and characteristics available on your device, such as thumbwheel, keyboards, wireless security, and synchronization with applications, e-mail, text messaging and more. The mobile operating system will also determine which third-party applications you can install on your device.
Android is a Linux-based operating system modelled mainly for touch screen mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. Android is nurtured in the nest of Google and carefully made open source to bring one of the biggest insurgency in the mobile operating systems.
iOS is a mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc. iOS is run by range of Apple devices like iPod, iPad and Apple TV. Gestures are the important input for iOS devices. They gestures are swipe, tap, pinch, reverse pinch. iOS is Apple’s mobile version of OS X which is used in Apple computers.
Symbian is a mobile operating system designed for smartphones. Symbian OS was extensively used by the Nokia mobile phones and is also used by other brands such as Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson.
Mobile IP is a standard communication protocol that is designed to allow mobile device users to move from one network to another while maintaining a permanent IP address.
The home network of a mobile device is the network within which the device receives its identifying IP address (home address).
A foreign network is the network in which a mobile node is operating when away from its home network.
The home address of a mobile device is the IP address assigned to the device within its home network.
The care-of address of a mobile device is the network-native IP address of the device when operating in a foreign network.
A binding is the association of the home address with a care-of address.
